Psalm 98 (ESV)

A Psalm.

Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
    he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
    let the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
    to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.

  1. The Lord has made known his salvation;
        he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations (Psalm 98:2).

    The Way

    The term "salvation" in today's psalm relates to God delivering His people from enslavement in Egypt. Throughout Scripture this event is used by God to point to His ability (and desire) to save His people in this life and also the next.

    In the New Testament, it is revealed that Christ is the only way of eternal salvation. The exclusivity of Christ in salvation is a point of contention for many who believe there are many ways to heaven – not just through Jesus Christ.

    But Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

    Jesus also said, "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent (John 17:3).

    We are not saved because of our righteousness but through the righteousness of Christ which is imputed to us when we put our trust in Christ and in faith receive Him as our Lord and Savior.

    When we are born again,
    we are born into Christ
    and are kept in Christ
    until we are with Christ
    forever in glory.

    People often say it wouldn't be fair or loving for God to provide only one way to heaven. But I am grateful He provided a way and that way is only through Jesus Christ.

    If God was fair, He would give everyone what we deserve which is eternity in hell. But because of His mercy and grace, He has provided the way of salvation for all who believe.

    John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

    Are you relying on one of the many paths to God for eternal life or have you trusted in Jesus Christ for your salvation?

    Is your faith in Christ alone or is it a combination of what Jesus accomplished on the cross combined with something else?

    Acts 4:12 says, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

    Jesus is the Way.

    Jesus is the Truth.

    Jesus is the Life.

    No one comes to the Father except through Him.

    There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we can be saved.

    ~ Puritan Prayers ~

    "Make My Heart the Good Ground" by Lewis Bayly

    "I know, O Lord, and tremble to think, that three parts of the good seed fell upon bad ground.

    Let not my heart be like the highway. Through hardness and want of true understanding it does not receive the seed, so the evil one comes and takes it away.

    Let not my heart be like the stony ground, which hears with joy for a time, but falls away as soon as persecution arises for the gospel’s sake.

    Let not my heart be like the thorny ground, which chokes the word and makes it altogether unfruitful because of the cares of this world and the deceit of riches.

    Let my heart be like the good ground. Help me to hear your word with an honest and good heart. Enable me to understand and keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience, for your glory and my everlasting benefit. Amen."

  2. WOW!!!!!!

    I am so encouraged by this reading! After the last few tumultuous days here at home, I woke up this morning and decided to keep my mouth shut, come what may from my family members.

    I put Christian music on, popped in my ear buds, and God started speaking to me right away.

    The first song that played was, "How Great is Our God," and the second was, "In the Eye of the Storm." I cried, worshipped, prayed, and put on His armour. I decided to open my ears and keep my big mouth shut.

    I brought out my Bible and my "Systematic Theology" book, and I  noticed a strip of paper being used as a bookmark. I took it out, and it simply said, James 1:26.

    Of course, I had to look it up. I read it, and was blown away.

    I then read this Psalm, tunes still on, and I feasted in His Word.

    I can't imagine going through this time without Him.

    I'm going to suit up in His armour, serve Him, and listen to His instruction.

  3. I am so encouraged by your comment this morning, Brynne. God wants to use our passions and emotions in productive, godly ways. He doesn't strip us of our personalities but sanctifies them so they can be used in "kingdom construction" and not sinful destruction.

    I love that James 1:26 was in the book. I have struggled and often failed in this area. I pray along with you that we would keep a tight reign on our tongues, put on the whole armor of God, pray more/talk less! 🙂
